The story behind Duck Parade
From Japanese symbolism to colourful XXL ducks
Duck Parade was conceived more than 20 years ago by Harue Koyama, a Japanese entrepreneur who has lived in Belgium for many years.
She drew inspiration from the oshidori, or mandarin duck. With its strikingly coloured plumage, this duck symbolises loyalty, affection and happiness in Japanese culture.
Harue Koyama turned that symbolism into a concept that brings people together through art and shared experiences. She deliberately chose the familiar rubber duck as its starting point: playful, accessible and loved across generations.
WHEN THE RUBBER DUCK TOOK OVER THE CITY
What began as a creative idea grew into a striking city event. Colourful XXL ducks take over public spaces, inviting visitors to discover their surroundings in a new way.
Each duck has its own design, character and story. Artists work with the same familiar shape, yet create something unique every time.
Following the Hasselt editions in 2021, 2022 and 2023, the XXL ducks return in 2026 to locations throughout the historic city centre and Quartier Bleu.
MUCH MORE THAN jUST A SCULPTURE PARADE
Duck Parade is much more than a walking trail featuring artist-designed ducks.
Previous editions have featured 60,000 small rubber ducks arranged to form the world’s largest duck carpet. Other highlights have included the Duck Expo, the Duck Shop, a duck race on the canal, special dinners and auctions of the XXL ducks.
All these initiatives bring together wonder and fun while supporting a good cause.
Art that makes a difference
Duck Parade raises funds for a good cause with every edition. The Hasselt editions in 2021, 2022 and 2023 supported Een Hart voor Limburg.
In 2026, the proceeds will go to Stop Darmkanker vzw.
With the support of partners such as Matexi, Quartier Bleu and the City of Hasselt, Duck Parade continues to grow, bringing together East and West, art and community, creativity and social commitment.
